On the evening of July 29 2015 Gold Coast District (GCD), Cross Cultural Liaison Unit (CCLU), hosted “Let’s Support You, To Support Your Community” – Domestic Violence Response Training.
The aim of this initiative is to provide community leaders from culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD), the skills and knowledge to present effective domestic violence awareness training within their individual CALD communities in the Gold Coast District.
Individual DV training folders and resources were provided to attendees with the following guest speakers providing specific information key facts and myths surrounding DV in CALD communities:
- Sergeant Debbie Phillips – QPS GCD Domestic & Family Violence Coordinator
- Marica Ristic – Domestic Violence Prevention Centre (DVPC)
- Wendy Hughes – The Department of Immigration
- Ilaria Legge – Department Human Services – Centrelink
- Robert Lachowicz – Refugee & Immigration Legal Service (RAILS)
- Tameka Melville – Legal Aid Family Lawyer
- Jenni Pickrell – Multicultural Community Council Gold Coast(MCCGC)
Around 50 community leaders, multicultural and religious association representatives attended the three hour training session at the Ashmore PCYC.
Feedback on the night indicated community representatives were inspired and felt confident now about delivering Domestic Violence training session(s) to their community members to encourage people to speak up, support each other and report domestic violence.
In three months, the GCD CCLU will host a follow up “Let’s Support You – To Support Your Community” – Domestic Violence Response Training session with the same community leaders to gauge feedback, collate data, and provide continued DV training / support and encouragement to the community leaders.
