Through a Memorandum of Understanding, the QPS and QR work in partnership to ensure passenger and staff security on the Citytrain Network. International and national research confirm integrated security and safety initiatives are necessary to curtail criminality and anti-social behaviour on rail networks.
The Railway Squad provides a high profile uniform presence on the Citytrain railway network in order to enhance the safety of all rail users. The Squad also provides a proactive, supporting and coordinating role for policing initiatives impacting upon people’s safety whilst traveling on the rail network
The goal of the Robina Railway outpost, situated at the Robina Train Station is to reduce and control criminal and anti-social behaviour to the point where passengers and staff experience high levels of confidence about their personal safety and security when travelling or working on the Citytrain Network.
Railway Squad members attend jobs at the request of Queensland Rail (QR) Control and the Police Communications Centre. Investigations and prosecutions range from minor railway infringements to indictable offences including willful damage and grievous bodily harm. Most offences detected by Railway Squad officers will be investigated by those officers.
The Railway Squad is a specialist support unit, assisting regional police with their primary responsibilities. Railway Squad officers assist and are required to liaise between local police and railway control at serious incidents on the network such as fatalities and accidents. The Railway Squad does not perform revenue protection duties other than through concurrent activity such as criminal investigations or anti-social behaviour detected in the rail environment.
Operations are frequently conducted in conjunction with regional police and Transit Officers.
Whilst the operations of the Railway Squad are based around the Citytrain network, the expertise within the rail environment is accessible as a statewide resource for advice and assistance. The Squad also assists other national law enforcement agencies in relation to investigations, research and advice.
