Armed robbery charges, Southport

Gold Coast detectives have charged a man following the alleged armed robbery of two women in separate incidents in Southport yesterday afternoon.

It will be alleged at around 2:40pm a woman was approached by a man at the intersection of Cotlew Street and Ferry Road. The man allegedly produced a large knife and demanded the woman’s purse. The 28-year-old woman complied with the man’s demands before he fled the scene.

Approximately 35 minutes later, another woman was approached by a man allegedly armed with a knife on Cloyne Road. The man allegedly demanded the woman’s bag, punching her in the face. The 26-year-old woman complied with the man’s demands before he fled the scene.

The man returned a short time later, allegedly stealing the woman’s car which was parked nearby.

Police conducted substantial patrols in and around the Southport area before detectives took a man into custody at a Biggera Waters address.

A 33-year-old Biggera Waters man has been charged with two counts of armed robbery and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today, August 29.
