If you ask a hundred police officers why they do the job they do you will likely get a hundred different answers.
You can guarantee that it won’t be to get rich, to make friends, or to get to wear a uniform. They won’t be doing it so they can have Christmas with their families, enjoy regular sleep patterns, or because they like a quiet life.
Although they will all have a different response, typically there will be a common theme, relating to helping the community and making it safer and a better place to live.
The International Association of Chiefs of Police is currently running a campaign on twitter called #WhyIWearTheBadge. It is designed to highlight the diversity and commitment of the law enforcement profession. Thousands of police officers from around the world have posted their reasons.
For me, I wear the badge because I want to make a difference, to be a voice for the people who can’t be heard, to be able to stand up for something that is right even when it is unpopular.
I wear the badge so I can do things that really matter, to be a part of a change for the better.
I wear the badge to help protect those that can’t protect themselves and to make things more fair.
Local police management are very proud of the women and men we work with, the ones who every day are asked to respond to uncertain, challenging and frequently dangerous situations. Their commitment to the community is very evident. The community can be equally proud of ‘your‘ police officers.
The next time you see a Queensland Police Officer, why don’t you speak to them and ask them why they wear the badge. I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.
