For the week ending February 28, Runaway Bay Police were busy with no less than seven drink drivers. Whilst 315 breath tests were performed, seven drivers recorded a breath alcohol concentration equal to or over the legal limit of .05%.
One driver was detected travelling at 32 km/h over the speed limit on Oxley Drive, Paradise Point on Saturday night. Once intercepted the driver recorded a breath alcohol concentration of .116%.
This driver posed a great risk to not only himself but other road users in being intoxicated, speeding and fatigued. With the combination of alcohol, speed and fatigue after a long day outside working, the driver’s chance of being involved in a serious or fatal traffic crash go through the roof.
A 22-year-old Upper Coomera man was issued a Notice to Appear at Southport Magistrates Court on March 8 for performing a large burn out only 80 metres from where a marked police vehicle was stopped at a red light. This burn out left substantial tyre marks on the roadway and a large cloud of tyre smoke. For his efforts this driver lost his vehicle for 90 days as police have the power to impound offender’s vehicles for such offences.
7 drivers were issued Notices to Appear at Southport Magistrates Court for drink driving offences ranging from .063% to .190% and failing to supply a specimen of breath.
Both marked and unmarked police vehicles are targeting known licensed venues within the Runaway Bay division, breath testing drivers. If you intend to drink, do not drive.
