payWave fraud: Protect your income

As part of a continued effort to decrease the number of credit card frauds, specifically focusing on payWave offences, the Pacific Fair Police Beat are promoting an initiative which has been successful in the Mackay District.

Police and Volunteers in Policing have commenced attending businesses at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and are issuing all store holders laminated cards to display beside registers advising customers that they may be asked for personal identification.

Many business owners are not aware that they have the right to ask a customer who chooses to make a payment within their store using the payWave method for identification. This is a way that stores can protect themselves from income loss.

To assist with credit card fraud offences, be alert for customers who:

  • Appear anxious
  • Have no identification
  • Appear in a hurry
  • Ask to split the transaction into separate amounts under $100
  • Request transactions be entered manually

You can report all suspicious matters to Policelink on 131 444.

If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day.

You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersqld.com.au 24hrs per day.
