The Gold Coast District (GCD), Cross Cultural Liaison Unit (CCLU) again supported the NRL Gold Coast Titans who hosted the NAIDOC family fun day on Tuesday, July 4 at Firth Park, Mudgeeraba.
Various police officers from the Gold Coast District participated in a tough rugby game against local indigenous players from the Preston Campbell Foundation, Kalwun and Krurungal health services.
This event is to promote an initiative from the GCD CCLU which is Project SUPAC (Sport Uniting Police and Community), to initiate, maintain and co-ordinate liaison and co-operation between police and the Indigenous people and communities of the GCD.
A highlight of the day was the unveiling of the SUPAC surfboard of former world champion surfer Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo kindly painted by the talented Preston Campbell which will be a perpetual trophy of this event and housed in the foyer of the Ashmore PCYC.
Also a big thank you to Gold Coast District Superintendent Craig Hanlon for donating the converted silver trophy which will accompany the surfboard.
Over 25 organisations attended the GC Titans NAIDOC Day which had activities, performers and information stalls all coming together to celebrate Australia’s rich indigenous heritage and culture.
This competitive touch football match was the main event of the day and was played in joyful spirits, big laughs and loads of talent displayed.
Congratulations to the Preston Campbell Foundation who won in the final against Krurungal health services. Overall the police team came third and Kalwun a close fourth but are eager to improve next year.
A big thanks to everyone who supported and who participated in what was a great community event demonstrating how important NAIDOC week is to the Gold Coast community.
