Police have donated two cars that were seized for hooning offences to the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE (GCIT).

Gold Coast Assistant District Officer Ben Hanbidge said the cars had been identified as suitable for GCIT’s automotive program.

“Police seized these cars after they were involved in type 1 or 2 hooning offences,” he said.

“Usually, these cars are sold at public auction, but as we recognised their suitability for use in GCIT’s automotive program, they were soon withdrawn from auction and authorised for donation.

“I am delighted that we are able to find a good use for some of these vehicles and it is great that we are able to give back to the Gold Coast community in a meaningful way.”

In this continued initiative the cars will be used as part of GCIT’s education and training programs.

GCIT Executive Director of Studies Lee Russell said the donation allows GCIT Automotive teachers to train in smaller groups when demonstrating on vehicles.

“GCIT’s automotive department requires at least 20 vehicles at any one time to ensure all our students have sufficient time to master a range of practical skills before heading out into the workforce,” she said.

“The cars will be used for competencies such as servicing, brake repairs, steering repairs, and engine electronics as well as for practicing manoeuvring vehicles onto hoists and workshop parking.”
