Gold Coast Police have charged a man after members of the public stopped him from driving whilst allegedly nearly five times over the legal blood alcohol limit in Main Beach.
It will be alleged around 6pm on Monday April 4 on MacAthur Parade the man attempted to drive his car but was prevented from doing so when one bystander parked their vehicle behind the man’s car to stop him from leaving the scene whilst other people phoned police.
The quick actions of these brave bystanders resulted in a prompt response by police who detained the male driver on the roadside and transported him to Surfers Paradise Police Station for a breath test.
The male driver returned an alleged reading of 0.235 per cent BAC.
Senior Sergeant Laurie Shevlin, Surfers Paradise police station said that although police were disappointed with the reckless behaviour of the man they were extremely appreciative of the goodwill displayed by all members of the public who assisted police and prevented a potential tragedy on the Gold Coast roads.
“It is very pleasing to see so many people in the community willing to help us make the roads safer.” Senior Sergeant Shevlin said.
A 42-year-old Southport man has been charged with drink driving and is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on April 19.
