Tallebudgera State School are partnering with Elanora Police Beat to deliver a pilot early intervention program.
Deputy Principal Andrew Burgess and the school chaplain selected the kids to take part in the trial program which is focussed around basketball and behaviour. The program was developed by Elanora Police Beat with the assistance of PCYC.
Adopt-a-Cop Senior Constable Dave Sammons, a Level 1 basketball coach who plays basketball as a team sport, guides the kids during the sessions. Senior Constable Sammons said early intervention with kids is key.
“Developing a positive relationship between the kids, schools, parents and police pays off in the longer term as many of them will end up in our local high schools,” Senior Constable Sammons said.
The program engages the children in developing some basic basketball skills. At the end of each session police talk with the kids and give them 3 points to think about during the week. The 3 points are on a slip of paper and they are encouraged to take them home and talk with their parents or carers. This session discussed 1) the importance of breakfast, 2) eating the right food and 3) table manners.
School Chaplain Todd Chamberlain initially approached police and also helps coordinate the program.
“It’s helping them to become better people in their classrooms, schools and community,” Mr. Chamberlain said.
The first session was very positive and good feedback was received from the kids and the school. The final aim is for the kids to shoot a 3-pointer, and take some positive messages into their school and home life.
