An usual firearm surrendered to police with a sheath covering was actually an air rifle
Elanora Police Beat recently took possession of this unusual looking weapon which turned out to be an air rifle.
Elanora Police Beat examined the weapon and was surprised how much it looked like a rim fire rifle. Most air rifles have a similar look but this one was from New York. Air rifles and rim fire rifles still require a licence and if not registered, should be surrendered to police or a firearms dealer.
The firearm had been stored for many years and forgotten about. When it was located, the owner decided to surrender it to police. The owner wisely came to the office and advised he had a weapon in his vehicle which he wished to surrender and that it was covered in a sheath.
Members of the public are still able to surrender weapons to their local police station. Weapons are regularly surrendered to the Palm Beach Police Station counter, some as a result of expired licences, and some as a result of people no longer wanting a firearm in their home. When surrendering a weapon it must be covered when in public.
Below are some guidelines for anyone wishing to surrender a firearm. If you do not wish to retain possession of a weapon you may choose to dispose of them by one of the following means:
- Relinquish your weapon at a Queensland Police Station,
- Sell your weapon to a dealer,
- Dispose of your weapon to a licensed dealer for consignment sale on your behalf; or
- Sell it to someone who is a holder of an issued Permit to Acquire for the weapon in question.
